Welcome to

Hadia Habibis’

Raqs Sharqi

Bellydance first used on 1899 is the English term for Raqs Sharqi meaning Oriental dance (dance of the Orient).  The Middle East is considered North Africa, Asia and the Middle East.  Raqs Baladi is the social form of Middle Eastern dance that natives grow up dancing at weddings and social gatherings. Raqs Sharqi is the more theatrical form that we teach today.  We mimic some poses and forms that are depicted in Ancient Egyptian art. Both Raqs Baladi and Raqs Sharqi are performed by men and women. There are many theories of how raqs sharqi came about and where it came from but the most popular and consistant theory is that is was an ancient birth dance that women would perform in private with no males present.
